Accessorizing can dramatically change an outfit. Most of us understand how a long drop necklace will create an entirely different impression than, say, a choker necklace.
But what happens if you put them together?
Layering necklaces isn't hard, but there is definitely a knack to getting it just right. Once you master the skill, it's an effective way to take your accessorizing to the next level.
Choose a Theme
One of the basic tenants of layering necklaces is to have some kind of theme. That doesn't mean everything has to be all the same, but there should be an underlying theme that ties everything together.
Themes can focus on style, material or color as opposed to an abstract theme, such as having all pieces be nautical themed or feature flowers. Having a common thread between the pieces will polish the look and bring everything together.
The Tangle Struggle is REAL
When you're getting ready to start layering necklaces, do yourself a favor and pick up and extender. This handy little accessory acts as a necklace organizer and lets you have everything hooked up nice and neatly back to front. This way, you can layer necklaces all you want without worrying about ending up with a tangled mess at the end of the day.
Consider Your Neckline
The neckline of your top or dress provides the frame for your stacked or layered necklaces. The line, color and style of your outfit - and especially your top - should complement each other. Consider how the shape pairs with each necklace - not just the ones that cross it.
Keep it Odd
There are several different schools of thought when it comes to the "right number" of necklaces for layering and stacking. Some insist on sticking to the 'Rule of Three' while others say as long as you keep it an odd number, you're safe. Generally speaking odd numbers do work better and most people three or five necklaces have the best results.
Break (Some of) the Rules
While you want to stick with the basic rules of using complementary colors and styles, don't be afraid to break at least some rules when it comes to layering necklaces. For example, 'Never Mix Metals' has been a rule for years in the jewelry world. But now we know it's okay to mix metals as long as they look good together. The same goes with different styles - think about a delicate chain with wispy accents paired against chunky necklace designs. When you're considering a look that technically goes against the rules of tradition, evaluate the look on its own merits.
Layering Necklaces and More
Of course, necklaces aren't the only piece of jewelry that lends itself to the layered or stacked look. Stacked rings and bracelets are also popular and transform an outfit.
No matter what layered look you choose to experiment with, remember the basic rules of accessorizing:
- Make sure the colors look good together.
- Don't let your jewelry overwhelm your look.
- Wear what you love!
Your accessories should complement your outfit, show off your style and make you feel like a million bucks. If you hit all those goals you'll look as good as you feel.
