Ordering a custom piece is a pretty big deal. Whether it be a necklace, pendant,  bracelet, ring or earrings - you want your jewelry to stand out. Buying a custom piece of jewelry is special because it is an original design created for you.  There are many factors that tie into buying a custom piece that you should be aware of.   We've brought together the essential tips for when you’re planning on getting a custom piece made just for you.

Be Descriptive

When you have a custom design for a piece, chances are you already have the idea in your head. Going forward, know that the more descriptive you are when ordering your piece, the better. Be sure you know whether or not you want your piece to be fully iced or just partial or even just a few gems/jewels. Go into the process knowing what you want and how you want it.  Jewelry shops and online artisans will have a better understanding and grasp on your design when they have more to go from.   Try sketching out your design or even writing notes on what you want your custom design to look like or make the most out of custom services offered by high-end jewelers.

Does Size Matter in Custom Jewelry?

For custom pieces such as pendants, having a size in mind is a good idea.  When having a custom necklace made, the jeweler will need to know what length you want your chain to be as well as the size of the gemstone you wish to display.

When having a ring customized, shops will obviously need to know what size ring you wear.   But they may also ask about your activities and hobbies.  Maybe a large stone will be cumbersome or perhaps your style requires something colorful.

With bracelets make sure you know your wrist size. Look at size charts or even go into a shop before hand and look at sizes that fit best for you especially if you are planning on ordering your custom piece online.

Be Aware Of Your Price Range

Going forward on a custom piece, be aware that you are likely going to spend a good amount of money - if you want something you'll keep forever.   With that in mind, set a limit on what you are willing to spend.  That will help your jeweler out tremendously on how they can design a piece that suits you as well as being in your price point.

Work with jewelers who understand quality doesn't have to break the bank.  Be cautious that whatever jewelry piece you choose, the price can be influences by gemstone choice and carat.  The more jewels the more money you are going to be spend.

Trust Your Choice

When you are creating a custom piece, it's about creating something from your own vision.  The first time, that can cause self-doubt.  After all, you're paying a fair bit for this - you don't want to regret it.  That's why it's so important to work with a company that understand each piece needs to be hand made with a customer in mind.  It's important to work with a jeweler who can help you bring out the best of your vision, enhanced by their experience.

Work with Someone You Trust

Whichever jeweler you decide to choose, make sure that you trust them.  Find a team that is committed to quality and sustainability - as well as a company with which you feel comfortable working.   Send an email or a message to their Customer Service team, chat with them online and see how they are with communication.

Ask friends and family for recommendations on different jewelers.  Choose a company that will make you feel proud when you answer questions about the amazing piece you're about to create!
